ALLING
ALL CANADIANS: EL Corte Ingles is featuring Canadian products in
the in-store delicatessens EL Club del Gourmet this month. Beers,
wines (including ice-wine), spreads, sauces and more (maple syrup
they stock all the time!).

A GOOD READ: Just out and an excellent read: " Ghosts of Spain" by the Guardian's "Man in Madrid" Giles Tremlett. Tremlett has lived in Spain (Barcelona and latterly Madrid) for nearly 20 years and this book is a mix of personal observations and journalistic research. Opening with a look at the attitudes to the Civil War, Franco, and the transition to democracy, he covers a wide range of topics, including the very timely questions of property development on the Costas, Euskadi and ETA, Catalonia, and Galicia, Al-Qaida and Al Andalus, and also: families, feminism, flamenco, Almodovar ....... The Faber & Faber paperback is available from FNAC at 10.45€. For newcomers to Spain it is an excellent introduction to the politics of this complex country and to Spanish society. For long-time residents a chance to learn more about some aspects you knew less about possibly (and there will also be lots of points where you nod in agreement!). An idea for "Sant Jordi"?

AND TRADITIONS: Chocolate Easter eggs and bunnies etc are all
over the place, here as elsewhere. A specifically Catalan tradition
is the “mona”. Look out for them (mainly in baker’s
and cake-shops): they can range from the traditional with real eggs
to elaborate (and very expensive) chocolate sculptures which often
have very topical subject matter.
