CULTURE
Art nouveau exhibition at Caixaforum
A
major exhibition at Caixaforum celebrates the influence of Siegfried
Bing whose Paris shop-cum-gallery “Art nouveau” gave its
name to a whole artistic movement. “Art Nouveau: the legacy of
Siegfried Bing” is organised jointly with Musée des arts
decoratifs in Paris and the Van Gogh Museum in Amsterdam and exhibits
350 pieces which passed through the gallery: glass, ceramics,
jewellery, drawings and paintings, engravings, even pieces of
furniture. The exhibition also shows Bing’s early fascination
with the arts of Japan: Van Gogh bought Japanese prints from Bing and
here you can see some of them together with a painting by Van Gogh
reflecting their influence. The Catalan painter Santiago Rusiñol
exhibited his series Jardines de España in the gallery
and two of the paintings appear here, lent by museums in Sitges and
Montserrat. Bing also created craft workshops and distributed
productions by the likes of William Morris and Tiffany (Bing was the
first to bring Tiffany glass to Europe). Caixaforum is also
organising a series of related lectures . More info on:
www.fundacio.lacaixa.es
The exhibition runs until 29th January 2006 and is open
Tues-Sunday 10am-8pm. Free admission.
Foujita
between East and West” is the title of an exhibition currently
showing in the Museu Diocesá next to Barcelona cathedral.
Tokyo-born Tsuguharu Foujita was one of the leading painters of the
Montparnasse School in Paris. The painter “managed to link
Western modernism to Japanese tradition, in fact he reflects the soul
of France joined to his Japanese roots”. The Museu Diocesá
is open daily from 10am – 8pm and the exhibition runs until
23rd October.

C
ULTURE:
JOAN MIRO EXHIBITION: The exhibition "Joan
Miró. Arquitectura d’un
llibre" is on at Fundació Joan Miró until 6
November. It shows
the intricate task of producing an illustrated book, only possible
when there is close collaboration between poet, artist and publisher.
We see Miró’s correspondence with poet, publisher and
print-maker, which allows us to reconstruct the history of a book and
obtain an insight into ambitious projects such as L’Antitête;
we see rough
sketches, mock-ups, printing plates that demonstrate his decision to
use such varied techniques as woodblock prints or etchings and
aquatints. “Having the opportunity to see this material gives
the viewer an idea of this creative process that Miró shared
with poets, publishers and print-makers, and in particular it enables
us to capture the spirit of an illustrated book”.
The Miró Foundation is on Montjuic at Avda Miramar 1 and is
open Tues-Sun. from 10am to 8pm.More info on 93 443 94 70 or (also in
English) www.bcn.fjmiro.es
