CULTURE: German Expressionists at MNAC

From 1st June the museu Nacional d’Art de Csatalunya MNAC will be the venue for a major exhibition dedicated to the German expressionist artists of “Die Brücke”, a group formed in Dresden 100 years ago. The exhibition has been organised jointly by the Thyssen-Bornemisza Museum in Madrid and the Brücke-Museum in Berlin and is transferring from Madrid to Barcelona before it is shown in Berlin in the autumn (it closes in Barcelona on 4th September). The exhibition features nearly 200 works (oils, watercolours, woodcuts, drawings and statues) More info:www.mnac.es



CULTURE: Fauve painters in Catalunya Nord

2005 also sees the centenary of Fauvism, and there are two exhibitions being shown in Catalunya Nord (which is where the movement started) to celebrate. The Musée d’Art Moderne de Céret, in collaboration with the museum in Matisse’s bithplace, Cateau-Cambrésis has organised an exhibition entitled Matisse-Derain Collioure 1905-1914 . which will be shown in Céret from18 June to 2nd October. There will be a further exhibition “Matisse et ses amis, Collioure 1905-1906” in Collioure itself, in the Château Royal. This exhibition will give visitors a unique opportunity to see the paintings in the place where they were painted and to compare them both with photographs from that time and with the landscape today. CULTURE: Pompei at Drassanes

The Museu Maritim at Drassanes has organised the exhibition Un dia a Pompeia : entre el Vesubi i el Mediterrani in collaboration with the Soprintendenza Archeologica di Pompei. For the first time outside Italy, visitors can see more than 200 items excavated from Pompei: furniture, jewellery, wall-paintings, statues etc. The exhibition is divided into 12 sections which show the everyday life of the inhabitants of Pompeii in 79AD. It also explains about how the volcanic ash preserved the remains over the centuries. The exhibition runs until 20th October.

CHILDREN: SUMMER CAMP IN ENGLISH: English Essentials will be organising a summer camp entirely in English in a casa de colonias/escuela granja in la Costa del Montseny from 1st to 14th July. CULTURE:MUSIC:CONCERT AT THE GERMAN SCHOOL: The Deutsche Schule Barcelona is celebrating the Silver Jubilee of the Canturia Choir. On Friday 3rd June there will be a celebratory concert at 8.30 pm with works by Bach, Grieg, Handel, Rachmaninov and others, and also Mass number 1 from Weber’s Freischütz . Performance will be in the may (Aula) of the German School in Esplugues. Tickets at 5€ are available at the school from 30th May and will be on sale at the door before the concert..



CULTURE: EXHIBITION: „La volta al món en vuitanta objectes“ (Around the world in 80 objects). The Museu Etnologic on Montjuic has organised an exhibition to commemorate the centenary of the death of Jules Verne. The focus is particularly on his novel “Around the world in 80 days” which was published in 1874. The exhibition shows objects mentioned in Verne’s novel, such as Japanese kimonos, African bazaars, and objects from “exotic” cultures such as Papua New Guinea. The aim is to show the perspective of European travellers in the nineteenth century, who were fascinated by far-away cultures which to them seemed exotic. The exhibition gives the visitor the chance to see the variety in the cultures of the world. The Museu Etnologic is on Pg. Santa Madrona, 16 between Font del Gat and Palau Nacional (MNAC). CHILDREN: LEISURE: The former Museu de la Ciencia, now revamped as Cosmo Caixa, is more popular than ever since it re-opened last autumn. Until October you still have the chance to see the dinosaur skeletons which are here on loan from Brussels. An ExtraGuide tip: to avoid having to queue for tickets in the museum, buy your tickets in advance at Servicaixa machines. And don’t worry if there are crowds at the entrance: the museum is so big that once you are inside there is plenty of room for everybody. Admission: Adults 3€,children 2€.



CULTURE: EXHIBITION: Upcoming: ”La Bauhaus de festa 1919-1933“. From 29th June until 4th September Caixaforum will be presenting an interesting exhibition based on material from the Bauhaus-Archiv in Berlin. The particular emphasis will be on the day-to-day life and the celebrations in the design school. Letters, photographs, posters and ephemera will be shown alongside drawings and collages by members of the group: Paul Klee, Walter Gropius, Kandinsky, Oskar Schlemmer etc. There will be free guided tours for the general public in Spanish on Thursdays at 6pm.Caixaforum is open daily except Mondays from 10am to 8pm.
