CARNIVAL: As Easter falls so early this year, carnival is already upon us! From Thursday 3rd (called here Dijous Gras) to Wednesday 9th February (Ash Wednesday) there will be celebrations in Barcelona itself, in Vilanova i La Geltrú, and especially in Sitges, which has the biggest carnival celebrations hereabouts, with processions, fireworks, gay carnival, fancy-dress competitions etc. The high points in Sitges are the procession through the town on Sunday evening (from 10pm) and the closing procession on Shrove Tuesday. Needless to say, parking will be a problem then! More info on: www.sitges.com/carnaval/ . In Vilanova the celebrations are more traditional with different barrios competing against each other (for example in the Battle of the Sweets in the Plaça de la Vila on the Sunday). Full programme on http://www.vilanova.org/carnaval/index.htm . Barcelona also joins in the celebrations in different parts of the city. You can find details (in English) on: www.bcn.es/carnaval/english/welcome.htm .

A TRADITION IN FEBRUARY: LA XATONADA: February is traditionally the month for the Xatonada in the Penedes and the Garraf. You’ll find xato ( a kind of salad) on the menu in Vilanova i la Geltru, Sitges and El Vendrell for example. The xatonada is closely related to carnival traditions: Vilanova’s carnival even opens with one. What makes this salad so special is the combination of salt-cod, tuna and anchovies with the unique sauce. Each town uses a slightly different recipe and restaurants vie with each other to see who makes the best xato. So, if you’re in the area, look out for it!

CULTURE: EXHIBITION: The Sala Montcada exhibition space of Fundació La Caixa has been transformed into an apartment this month! The Swiss artist Zilla Leutenegger presents “Wishful Thinking” – a promising installation, which shows an apartment full of contradictions and ambivalences. The visitor can watch the fictitious life in this apartment on video and in a slide-show and thus the frontiers between dream and reality merge. From 29th January to 13th February in Sala Montcada at Carrer Montcada, 14. Open Tues-Sat 11am-3pm & 4- 8pm. Sundays 11am- 3pm

CULTURE: PHOTOGRAPHIC EXHIBITION IN GIRONA: With the title “TV-Wars” the German artist Monika Anselment presents images of wars in different countries as shown in TV news programmes between 1991 and 2004. The main theme is the visual effect of the images – fireworks over a city, a colourful ball of light, a sunset, pillars of smoke– and their consequent aesthetic appeal. The photos show how the images were used as a spectacle and a demonstration of force. More info on:
www.fundacioespais.com. The exhibition runs from 4th February to 5th March. Mon-Sat 12 noon-2pm & 4.30 –8.30pm. Closed Sundays. Fee admisión. Fundació espais d'art contemporani, Pou Rodó 7 – 9, 17004 Girona, Tel. 972 20 25 30.

WEB-SITE OF THE MONTH: To get tickets for a variety of activities, or just to get an idea of what’s on (sport, music, theatre etc) go to http://ww4.serviticket.com . There you can call up a calendar of events for a specific place. All events and venues (incl cinemas) appear in alphabetical order, so you can look up a concert and book the ticket straight away. You do still have to pick up the tickets however: either at the venue itself or through a ServiCaixa machine. For those who don’t like booking over the internet, there is also a phone number: 902 33 22 11, or you can go to the Servicaixa machines.
